Remembering a Legacy

Carnie P. Bragg Jr.

(1939-2020)

Born in New York, New York, Carnie resided in Passaic, New Jersey for 5 years before moving to Paterson, NJ in 1945. He was educated at Public School No. 6, Eastside High School, and graduated from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee in 1961.

After graduating from the McAllister School of Embalming in 1962, he was licensed in 1963. Carnie enlisted in the United States Army Reserve as a Medic in 1962, and received an Honorable Discharge in 1968.

When Carnie was seven years old, he worked on his first funeral. He knew then that he wanted to be a Funeral Director. In his High School yearbook, he inscribed, as his aspiration “To be a Mortician.” Remarkably, this ambition from early childhood continued throughout his high school days. It was during this time that he industriously became interested in the business as a career for himself.

After graduating from McAllister School of Embalming, he joined the family business. As he continued to work with his parents, Carnie realized that working with families and ministering to people in need was very rewarding for him personally, and he has been there ever since. Carnie worked with his Dad until his father’s untimely death on August 4, 1972. Since then, he has been the Senior Director at the Funeral Home.

Carnie joined the Calvary Baptist Church in 1948, where he directed the Gospel Chorus. He was extremely supportive of many churches in Northern New Jersey. Since 1991, he has sung in the Hampton University Ministers' Conference and Choir Directors' Organists' Guild Workshop Choir. He was inducted into the Halls of Fame for School # 6 and Eastside High School.

Professionally, Carnie was a member of the National Funeral Director’s and Mortician’s Association, National Funeral Directors Association, New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association, Passaic County Funeral Directors Association, and the Garden State Funeral Directors Association.

Carnie was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity (Lambda Upsilon Chapter), Integrity Lodge #51 F & A.M (P.H.A.), American Lodge #333 I.B.P.O.E of W, Fisk University Alumni Association, the Patersonians Five Ladies and a Gent Social Club, the Fellas Social Club of New York, an associate member of the National Council of Negro Women and had two life memberships in the N.A.A.C.P. He was also an honorary Lifetime member of the Interdenominational Women’s Conference.

He was a member of the Paterson Rotary Club, where he served as President from 1981-1982.  Since 1972 he served on the Board of Directors for the Paterson Boys and Girls Club. Also, he is a member of the Passaic County Community College Foundation and a member of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (N.J.P.A.C).
