Bertha Mae Smith, daughter of Deacon Harry Smith and late Sarah Jenkins Smith, was born December 20, 1952, in the Big Estate Community of Beaufort County, South Carolina. She departed this life on Monday, December 14, 2013 at her residence in Big Estate.
Though born in South Carolina, she lived most of her life in Paterson, New Jersey where she attended PS#4 and John F. Kennedy High School. After graduating from High School, she went on to Business
During her early years, she accepted Christ as her personal savior. Was baptized and became a member of the Christ Temple Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Reverend Freddie Robinson. At Christ Temple, she joined the Junior Choir and at the age of 18, she joined the Young Adult Choir. She was a faithful member until returning to South Carolina in 2011.
Bertha was employed for several years at Henell Fashions. She later received her certification as a C N A and gained employment at Preakness Hospital where she worked for 24 years until her illness prevented her from continuing.
Bertha enjoyed watching Lifetime, BET. TV1 and 106 and Park. She also enjoyed watching videos with "Neyo" being one of her favorites.
She was also a devout family person who loved her family dearly.
She leaves to cherish memories created by her having lived are her son, Trindell "Timmy" Smith and her daughter, Serina S. Smith both of Paterson, New Jersey; her father, Deacon Harry Smith of Big Estate; two sisters, Deborah Aiston of Big Estate and Harriet Compton of Paterson, NJ; the joys of her life, her seven grandchildren: Deonte, Trindella, Trinashera, Joshua, Trindell, Jr., Chelsey and Kelsey; several nieces and nephews to include her favorite niece, "Neecee" Compton, who was of great help to her in her last days; her best friend of 52 years, Phyllis "Sissy" McLaurin, a dear friend, John Pearson and a special friend, Denise Doe.
Also left to cherish her memories, Addie Perry of Big Estate, Annie Ruth Jenkins of Vero Beach, FL, Naomi Allen, Anna L. Young, Labertha (Milton) Williams, Rose Mobley all of Big Estate, SC, Jessie Bailey and Maude "Chester" West of Orlando, Fl.
